    GLASS: AN EXTRAORDINARY MATERIAL

Glass is a material whose value needs not be proven: its numerous qualities make it one of the truly indispensable materials for a renovation project. However, being robust, transparent and relatively light, glass is no longer only used for renovation, but also for decoration!

There exist different types of glass:

    • Laminated glass
    • Tempered glass
    • Ornamental glass

Laminated glass is created by assembling sheets of glass and plastic dividers – a combination that ensures safety and protection in case of chock/impact. In fact, the glass pieces stay glued to the plastic film, which helps prevent injury and avoids total breakage of the window. This type of window comes in different colors, and when sufficiently thick, can be used to create glass flooring or stairs.

Tempered glass is created through a rapid cooling process. This method of fabrication makes tempered glass 2 to 5 times stronger than ordinary glass. In addition, in case of chock/impact, this type of glass breaks in very small pieces that are not particularly sharp. Tempered glass is notably used to create partitions (doors, shower enclosures…).

Ornamental glass can be lacquered, which gives it an aesthetical and opacifying feel. Due to its decorative and “design” look, it is often used for walls, doors, cabinets and working surfaces. Ornamental glass can also be self-colored. This latter type colors while maintaining its transparency. Finally, ornamental glass can be printed or acid-etched. This type of glass is very practical as it blurs the image enough to provide privacy, all while letting the light pass through.
